Sit Still, I Said!

A little more revision and breaking the sonnet visually into its constituent quatrains and couplet.

Damn words won't sit still.
Keep moving around on me.
       sit
I put them in one spot
Now, stay where I put you!
              still

They end up getting themselves
Mixed up in odd combinations
That don't make sense any.
I didn't put them there.

They moved around in secret.
       (sneak)       (sneak)       sit
Made a mess out of everything.
Beat the hell out of them
       Sit still!
They just cry (sniff) like a whiny-baby. (sniff)

I pick them up and hug them
And put them back where I had them.

You didn't ask for it but here's how I'd edit your already good poem. There's some sort of E.E. Cummings motif going here. I like it. But it's a hard sell. Making direct correlations such as words to children is tough. Every little nuance must be allowed in and every obvious connection must be left out. So here's my take on it for what it's worth...with often is very little...

Damn words.
Won't sit still.
Tiny legs. Scuttling.

I put them in their place.
Sit still
I write.

They always seem to
get themselves mixed up.
Odd combinations
Don't make sense any.

I didn't put them there.
They moved around
in secret.
(sneak) (sneak) sit
Made a mess of everything. (OF WHAT???)

(THERE IS A LINE OR TWO MISSING HERE: SOMETHING ABOUT THEIR NEED TO CONSTANTLY MOVE)

I want to beat the hell out of them
sit still!
Watch them cry like whiny-babies.

I pick them up instead
hug them
put them back where
I think they belong.
